2012: End of the World or Not?
Nowhere in Mayan writings do you find any implication of worldwide catastrophe. Still when many people hear '2012,' end of the world is the first thing that pops into their heads. This is because of a massive media machine that has pushed this concept for the last nine years. We made it through Y2K successfully, no massive computer failures, no second coming, no world war, so they feel a need to generate a new mode of panic.
The Mayans believed that the universe had natural epochs and that one of these epochs is due to end in the year 2012. While we may never know specifically why they didn't continue their calendars beyond that year, it is much more likely that when the calendars were written the year 2012 was so far off no one thought it was important. Of course the Mayans lived in a much more violent culture than modern people, so their versions of divinely inspired changes tend to be more energetic then our own.
Today we look forward to the year 2012 arriving in the near future. We are aware of some cosmic changes that will occur in that year. The most significant is the new age of Aquarius that is to begin in the spring of 2012.
The zodiacal constellations are arranged in a circle that surrounds the solar system. Because the earth moves with a wobble our perception of which constellation rises in the spring changes very slowly, about a degree every 72 years. In the course of about 26,000 years the entire set of constellations move one rotation, relative to our planet. Until now we have been in the age of Pisces, which will change in 3 years.
